GSM bugs (which send the signals they recieve out on mobile phone frequencies are now the most common bugs used by spies. They are usually tiny and pretty much untraceable once installed. To protect themselves, the big boys use tools to sweep the area for signals. Searchlight from QCC can detect illicit broadcasts and pinpoint their location. However this is not cheap off the shelf equipment, unlike the bugs themselves which are easy to get hold of.
